“Try this to save your world”…

PSA: Of course the SARS-CoV-2 virus evolved naturally on Earth! Do not spread fake news. But the wink to #TheXFiles (and @[100140296694563:274:Ancient Aliens], with that “””History””” Channel logo) was too good to pass. Environmentalist food for thought. #sixthextinction

Anxious to get @[114444205294473:274:Mark Snow]’s #TheXFiles soundtrack Volume 4? Apparently, it’s “in the very final stages in production and will be released this year, hopefully by late summer”! Fingers crossed! And if you don’t have it yet, now is a good time to get Volume 2 from @[56031953754:274:La-La Land Records], now only 100 units left before it goes out of print… Support small record companies! https://lalalandrecords.com/low-stock-alert/

Today May 21 marks the *20th anniversary* of the airing of #TheXFiles season 7 finale, “Requiem”. After all these years, given what followed, I still see this as the most apt point to call it a *series* finale, even if nothing had followed — no season 8, no movies, nothing. There is value to ending something instead of having eternal sequels and revivals and reboots, in any work of art. Would you rather have more and more of something with some good in increasingly less dense proportions, or a short compact run that shines for the ages? Fade out from overexploitation or be remembered as short and sharp?

“Requiem” was not perfect and the mythology of season 7 as a whole was lacklustre, partly due to many behind the scenes issues. But there is a poetic quality to ending things here: coming full circle at the site of the Pilot (the kind of thing you do for a finale, not a middle chapter). Mulder “discovering his Truth/God” with that abduction, Scully getting the unexpected pregnancy (which is less problematic if the show had stopped there and we didn’t play the games of season 8 and beyond), the negative counter-balancing the positive. A tragic end where the heroes are separated worthy of a theatre play or a classic novel. An ending which leaves the door open to the imagination like classic X-Files (will Mulder return? is Scully’s pregnancy a miracle?), which is more satisfying than the developments writers came up with afterwards in order to continue the story endlessly. Ending with a “bang” instead of in season 8 ending with the heroes together but with the mythology in shambles.

20 years since the 1990s ended, since The X-Files ended with no “to be continued”.

Finally saw the Breaking Bad movie #ElCamino! Memory refresher: in Vince Gilligan’s #ΤheXFiles episode “Paper Hearts”, child serial killer John Lee Roche’s car was also a 1970s El Camino; Mulder finds clues hidden in the car’s camper shell (Alice in Wonderland book and cloth hearts). The car and the camper shell are also featured in Gilligan’s movie! (and, no spoilers, but I half-expected Jesse to find what he was looking for in the camper shell)

Bonus trivia: in “Paper Hearts” the car is in Hollyville; in “El Camino” it’s at the address Holly & Arroz (Rice). Gilligan inserts many references to his girlfriend Holly Rice in his works!

Sneak peak into #TheXFiles: The Official Archives, coming September 15. 50 case files examined, from 1993 to 2018. It looks like a modern-looking FBI Agent discovered Mulder & Scully’s files and reads them through and takes handwritten notes. The sample pages are on the Wanshang dhole, from 6X16: Alpha! 50 cases and about 300 pages for about 150 stand alone episodes, that’s about 6 pages per case and 1/3 of the cases covered – a best of!
