ETC 20th anniversary! + TXF theme on Stylophone

Yes, Eat The Corn was launched 20 years ago today! Without patting myself too much in the back, I think this is objectively a big achievement, especially given how different the internet is today compared to twenty years ago, the remote year 2005. Against the odds, I have continued to cover X-Files news over all those years, although in recent years with more focus on relaying and commenting all the great interviews made by others, instead of doing original analysis myself. The site has become more of an archive, and that’s good enough given how old the series now is.

As long as I’m here, the site is not going anywhere.

Other engagements don’t allow me to celebrate more extensively. But I will relay something fun: a cover version of The X-Files theme, and this one includes the extended version made by Mark Snow for the release of the theme as a CD single (and used in the end credits of the VHS “Files”). Here is the theme played on one of the smallest and simplest analog synthesizers around: the stylophone! By Omen Ahead.

Admittedly, there’s another version from years ago — fun too, but not as good.

19th birthday + Hello Fediverse!

EatTheCorn.com is officially 19 years old as of today! It is, with a difference, the world’s oldest X-Files website that is still actively maintained. (English-speaking website I should specify, as there are still some non-English old-timers too.)

This website is now also federated via the ActivityPub protocol, so you can follow and interact with me in the Fediverse (e.g., Mastodon) at: @orodromeus. Edit: the WordPress/Fediverse linking seems to have some issues, so instead it is best to follow my account, which I will use to notify website updates: @orodromeus@mstdn.social.

This appears to be the best option going forward, considering the all-encompassing enshittification. I will also be testing bridges to other things (like BlueSky bridge). This will take some experimenting. Over the past few years I had taken the habit of posting updates in Facebook and updating the website itself only occasionally; this will change from now on, expect more frequent website updates and links to those updates in other social media.

Finally, some fun! With this “Muldle” app, you can test your X-Files knowledge! Only the “High Score” tab works for me: try to identify which episode screenshots come from, identify ten in a row to get one point, and compete with fans worldwide. I am currently at number 75, which is no small feat.

Muldle.app website screen capture. Rules for the High Score game: name 10 episodes from 10 screenshots to win a point.

ETC 18th anniversary!

The X-Files: Eat The Corn is officially an adult! The website was launched 18 years ago. A lifetime ago! Incredible what you could do then with “made with Mozilla, Notepad and care” 🙂

Starting from purely The X-Files mythology, the site has grown to comment news and archive the past of all things Ten Thirteen. With no plan to retire whatsoever.
